Dancing in Lansing, Sat Sept 17
Hi all - well, here we are in September, and we are going to gather together this coming Saturday for a contra dance. Speaking of gathering- thanks to those who were able to make it to our picnic/birthday party at Potter Park on Aug 20. It was a fine way to celebrate several of our August birthday folks
The dance this Saturday, Sept 17, is co-presented by Ten Pound Fiddle and Looking Glass Music and Arts Association, will be held at Central United Methodist Church (CUMC) - that’s 215 N Capitol Ave in Lansing, MI. The dances will be taught and called by Bev Bernbaum - making the drive from Toronto to be with us - and dance tunes will be provided by MJM Music Makers Band. There will be an intro lesson (or brush-up) for those interested beginning about 6:30pm. The Dance begins at 7pm and will end by 10pm. We are returning to our pre-pandemic pricing- $12 for general public, $10 for members and $6 for students (HS, college etc). Young folks, under 15, get to dance at no charge!
Hey- I just got word that the parking lot that is on Capitol Ave will be closed for repair and painting until sometime next week- so it will not be available for the dance this Sat. There is the ramp north and west of the church and of course there is street parking as well. Oh- big traffic change - Capitol Ave is now a two street for part of its length, including by CUMC. Drive with caution as you figure out how it works.
Since Looking Glass does memberships a year at a time and didn’t sell them during the pandemic- no one is a member at this point.
We will be renewing or starting Looking Glass memberships at this dance (and the next few). The price is $15 per year - with the membership year now beginning in Sept. Membership gets you a $2 discount per dance (both 1st and 3rd Saturdays) and shows the board that you want to support and encourage Contra and Square Dancing in Lansing.
Sad to say, Covid19 is still with us. Local numbers are slowly climbing again- a good friend of mine just came down with it. Since dancing requires such close contact- not to mention breathing really close to your partner’s face, we are continuing the Covid precautions we used in the spring.
- Everyone must provide proof of full vaccination (along with a photo ID). We hope that you have gotten at least one booster.
- Masks MUST be worn at all times, except when drinking water. We will provide straws. Surgical masks are better than cloth masks. N95, or K95 are even better.
- Everyone will provide contact information after presenting vaccine credentials — email and phone number. A picture on your phone of your vaccine card is OK
- Please don’t bring snacks to share. There will not be snacks at the dance
- If you are feeling off or SICK- DO NOT Come.
Let’s see, the next dance in town will be Saturday, Oct 1. This dance will also be at CUMC. Caller will be Laurie Pietravalle and Music will be provided by Tanna and The Tall Boys Same schedule as above.
Michigan Dance Heritage Dance Weekend is happening Sept 23-25 at Camp Cavell near Lexington, MI- right on Lake Huron. They are still accepting registrations. More info at https://michigandanceheritage.org/fall
Ann Arbor is planning for Tree Town Stomp Dance Weekend - it will be Oct 21-23 at the Concourse Hall more info at https://aactmad.org/tree-town-stomp
I’ll see if I can find out more about other Fall weekends before my late Sept email.
Hope you are doing well and enjoying this transition into Autumn. I do love the subtle changes in the sky and the trees, and all the color and variety at the Farmer’s Market this time of year.
See you soon, Julie LW
